Look up your numberWhat is a premium-rate number?
Premium-rate services let you pay for services or content through your phone bill. They can include competitions, information lines and entertainment. Numbers starting with 09 are premium-rate numbers; other phone-paid services can use different number ranges, text or voice short codes, or a service name for purchases billed through your mobile provider.
What is a short code on my phone bill?
A short code is a short number used for texts or calls, such as competition entries, voting or donations. UK codes are commonly 5–6 digits, and some services use 4 digits. Premium SMS (sometimes shown as PSMS) can charge for sending or receiving a message. Other codes are free or standard-rate, so a short code alone does not confirm a premium charge. Enter the code exactly as shown beside the charge; don’t add +44.
What is direct carrier billing or ‘charge to bill’?
Direct carrier billing (DCB) lets you pay for a subscription, digital content or a purchase through your mobile bill or pay-as-you-go credit. The charge may show a service, merchant or payment-provider name rather than a phone number. If no number is shown, use “No number shown? Find a service” and enter the service name from your bill.
How do I stop a premium text or phone-bill subscription?
Check the confirmation text, receipt or provider’s customer-care page for cancellation instructions. If the service gives a STOP instruction, follow it for that service. Your phone company can help identify the provider and explain available billing blocks or spending controls. Cancelling future charges does not automatically refund previous payments.
Why does the call cost more than a normal call?
Calls to 084, 087, 09 and 118 numbers have two parts: a service charge set by the organisation you call, and an access charge set by your phone company. Check both when reviewing your bill.
Can Ofcom issue a refund for me?
No. Ofcom regulates premium-rate services, but cannot mediate individual cases or obtain refunds.
Why start with a number lookup?
Your bill may show a number instead of a service name. Our lookup brings available provider details and community comments together to help you understand the charge and find who to contact. The provider handles refund requests, so start by contacting them directly.
How do I request a refund?
Use the customer-care details on the number page, where available. Give the provider the charged number, date and amount, and explain your concern. A request does not guarantee a refund. If unresolved, ask your phone company for help.
Where does Who Charged Me’s information come from?
Number pages combine the number and service-provider information held in our directory with comments submitted by visitors. Recent searches show numbers looked up on this site. Community comments describe individual experiences; they are not verified findings about a service or proof that a charge is wrong. We do not have access to your phone bill.
What if there are no details for my number?
Our directory does not cover every number. Ask your phone company to identify the service provider behind the charge. If you recognise the provider, use “Suggest a provider” on the number page to share the company name and where you found it. Suggestions appear as public community comments, not verified directory details. Missing details or comments do not tell you whether a charge is valid.
